The recipe
for your table
Pour the chilled energy drink into a highball glass, to about one-third full.
Fill a shot glass with Jägermeister that has been in the freezer for at least an hour.
Drop the shot glass upright into the highball glass - don’t throw it, just let go.
Drink immediately: after half a minute, the energy drink loses its fizz and the mix becomes flat.
The story
Jägermeister has existed since 1935 and was drunk in Germany for decades as a digestif - a herbal liqueur with 56 botanicals, especially popular among an older generation. That image changed in the 1990s, when American college bars discovered the brand and combined it with the newly launched energy drink. The bomb shot itself is older: the principle of dropping a shot glass into a larger glass is also known as a Boilermaker and, in Dutch form, as a kopstoot. The Jägerbomb turned it into the student ritual it is today worldwide.
The right glass
For a Jägerbomb, you need two glasses, and they need to fit together. The shot glass should drop easily into the larger glass without getting stuck: choose a straight-sided model holding 4 to 6.5 cl with a sturdy base. The bottom glass is a highball or tumbler holding at least 33 cl - any smaller and you’ll end up with a puddle on the table. Choose shot glasses made of thick glass: with this cocktail, they spend the whole evening clinking against each other and the bottom of the larger glass.

The right tools
For a Jägerbomb, in addition to the glasses, use a jigger for precise measuring and a bar spoon for stirring. These are the bar tools we use ourselves; you can find everything in our bar tools & cocktail sets.

Variations & twists
Replace the energy drink with cola and you have a Jäger Cola; with beer, the same combination is called a Boilermaker, and with jenever and lager, a kopstoot. A Skittle Bomb uses triple sec instead of Jägermeister. Looking for more inspiration? Browse all cocktail recipes.
Serving tip
Store the bottle of Jägermeister permanently in the freezer: at –18 °C, the liqueur becomes syrupy and the sharp alcoholic edge disappears. Serving a row of bombs? First set out all the long drink glasses and only then the shots - otherwise your energy drink will be flat before everyone can join in. And stick to one or two: the combination of alcohol and caffeine masks how drunk you are.
Frequently asked questions
Which glasses do you use for a Jägerbomb?
A straight-sided shot glass of 4 to 6.5 cl and a long drink or tumbler glass of at least 33 cl. View our shot glasses and long drink glasses.
How much Jägermeister goes in?
A standard 3 cl shot with approximately 12 cl of energy drink. More Jägermeister makes the mix herbal and bitter; less energy drink makes it syrupy.
Why do you drop the shot glass in?
Purely for the effect - and because the impact makes the liqueur mix with the energy drink all at once. You can also simply pour in the Jägermeister; it tastes the same.
Can you make a Jägerbomb alcohol-free?
Yes: there are now alcohol-free herbal bitters that closely resemble Jägermeister's herbal, slightly bitter profile. Combine with a sugar-free energy drink for a lighter version.
