What is Salmari Vodka?

Salmari, but stronger and drier

Salmari is best known in the Netherlands for its black salmiak liqueur at 25%. Salmari Vodka takes that same licorice flavor and gives it a 40% vodka base. The vodka is made in Finland from wheat and Finnish glacial water, and is column-distilled.

The difference from the liqueur comes down to sweetness and strength. While regular Salmari is thick and sweet with a salty kick, the vodka is drier and less sweet, letting the salmiak flavor come through more sharply. It’s intended for those who want a stronger licorice shot, or a long drink with an energy drink in which the liqueur would be too sweet.

What does Salmari Vodka taste like?

Salty licorice without the syrup

Nose

Salmiak

The familiar aroma of salty licorice and licorice root, a little sharper than in the liqueur because of the higher strength.

Mouth

Dry and salty

Less sweet and thinner than regular Salmari. The salmiak takes the lead, with a warm alcohol note from the 40%.

Finish

Long and warm

The licorice flavor lingers, with more warmth than the liqueur and hardly any sweet aftertaste.

How to drink it

How to drink Salmari Vodka

Cold is key. Straight from the freezer, the vodka is smoother and the licorice flavor comes through nicely; straight or lengthened with energy drink are the two classics.

Ice-cold shot

Put the bottle and glasses in the freezer and pour 2 cl per shot. The cold makes the vodka slightly syrupy and softens the 40% alcohol. Drink it in one go.

Everything about Salmari →
What percentage of alcohol is in Salmari Vodka?
Salmari Vodka contains 40% alcohol. The well-known Salmari salmiak liqueur is 25%.
Does Salmari Vodka taste like licorice?
Yes. It has the same licorice flavor as Salmari liqueur, but as a vodka: drier, stronger, and less sweet.
What's the difference between Salmari Vodka and Salmari liqueur?
The liqueur is 25% alcohol and sweet and syrupy, with a salty kick. The vodka is 40% alcohol, drier and less sweet, so the salmiak flavor comes through more clearly.
What do you mix with Salmari Vodka?
Energy drink is the classic: one part vodka to three parts energy drink, with lots of ice. Cola with a wedge of lime works well too.
Should Salmari Vodka go in the freezer?
You don't have to, but it's best served ice-cold. With 40% alcohol, it won't freeze; it will just get a little thicker and smoother.
