Rosé wine glasses

The usable capacity is between 20 and 33 cl. Below 20 cl, you will quickly end up filling it to the brim, leaving no room for the aromas. Above 35 cl, the wine has so much surface area that it reaches room temperature within ten minutes, which is a shame with a fresh Provence rosé. A bowl of around 28 cl is the safest choice for virtually any style.

Next, look at the shape of the opening. A bowl that narrows slightly toward the top keeps the aromas together, which helps bring out the subtle floral and fruity notes of pale rosé. More powerful rosé from the southern Rhône or a full-bodied Tavel can handle a wider bowl. If you work in hospitality, a model with a graduation mark is practical, because every guest then gets the same serving size. A stackable model saves cupboard space when used on a terrace. Also pay attention to the stem: a long stem keeps your hand away from the bowl, and therefore keeps heat away from the wine, which matters more with rosé than with red wine.

Drink rosé chilled, at around eight to ten degrees. Colder than that and the fruit disappears; warmer and the wine becomes flabby. Take the bottle out of the refrigerator well before serving and place it in a cooler while drinking, because rosé warms up faster in the glass than white wine due to its wider bowl.

Pour to the widest point and no higher, about one-third of the bowl. It looks modest but gives you room to swirl without spilling, and keeps the rest of the bottle cold instead of letting it become lukewarm in the glass. If the rosé goes into a mixed drink, it moves to different glassware: sangria pour into a large glass with plenty of ice and fruit, while a hugo spritz belongs in a large balloon glass that can hold both mint and ice.

The material here runs from toughened hospitality glass to lead-free crystal. Toughened glass is clearly more impact-resistant and lasts for years in a busy venue. Crystal glass is thinner, clearer and more pleasant on the lip, but asks for more care when washing. For a terrace, choose the first; for a laid table, the second.

Pay attention to the finish of the rim. A bowl with a thickened, rolled rim is stronger but feels heavier; a laser-cut rim runs clean and is nicer to drink from. Every series here is dishwasher-safe. Place stemmed glasses loosely in the rack and let them drain upright, because a glass that dries on its rim will pick up damage there over time.
