Schott Zwiesel

Choose based on use first, and only then on the series. Banquet is the classic hospitality glass with a sturdy stem and bowls of 36.8 and 47.5 cl, made to be ordered by the crate and refilled for years.

For home use, there are series supplied in sets of four instead of six, such as For You and Fave, with the same Tritan quality in a slightly softer shape and a smaller box. Those looking for a single special glass will find Diva, an 84 cl Burgundy bowl supplied in pairs in gift packaging. If you want to see how these bowls compare with other brands, compare them alongside the red wine glasses and the white wine glasses, where all brands are sorted by size.

The nice thing about a brand with this breadth is that you can serve an entire menu from a single design line. The Beer Basic glasses have an engraved 30 cl fill line, which is mandatory in the hospitality industry when pouring beer and which you will find on the other beer glasses. The Finesse champagne flute has a nucleation point: a tiny rough spot on the bottom where the carbon dioxide attaches, so one neat stream of bubbles rises instead of random bubbles.

The heavier whisky glasses, ranging from 33 to 40 cl, fit exactly one large ice cube, which is what you need for an Old Fashioned that slowly opens up. And if you prefer bubbles, a French 75 is the recipe for which a narrow flute with a nucleation point makes the biggest difference. The 6 and 8 cl shot glasses round out the range and are especially known in the Netherlands as jenever glasses.

Tritan was developed with the dishwasher in mind. The glass stays clear longer because it is less susceptible to the lye in dishwasher detergent, and the rim and stem are reinforced against the knocks that are inevitable in a rack. That does not mean you can do anything: stems that knock against each other can still break.

Use a short glassware program and keep the temperature moderate. If a dull haze remains, it is limescale from hard water, not damage to the glass; a splash of vinegar in the rinse water will remove it. For narrow wine glasses and decanters, a glass brush with a soft head works better than a cloth, especially for a decanter whose bottom you cannot reach with your hand.

Pay attention to the name when searching further, because Zwiesel Glas is another brand with its own collection, even though both come from the same Bavarian town. If you want carafes, mixing jugs, and serving jugs from the same makers, you’ll find them under carafes. And if you prefer to search by shape rather than brand, the collections in the menu on the right sort everything by glass shape and capacity, so you can compare Schott Zwiesel directly with other brands and compare them by size.
