La Rochere Boudoir

The two sizes suit different occasions. Twenty-five centiliters is the size for water, juice, or a spirit over ice: it holds a generous serving without making the glass top-heavy. The 35 cl glass is taller and narrower and intended for a mixed drink with plenty of ice. If you have to choose one, take the tumbler, as it is the most versatile. You can also compare it with the broader category tumbler glasses, or with the highball glasses if you mainly serve mixed drinks. Both sizes come in packs of six, so you can set a table for six with a single package and have nothing left over.

Textured glassware looks best with large, clear ice cubes; small cubes melt quickly and water down the drink before the pattern can do its work. For a old fashioned in the tumbler, use one large cube and stir directly in the glass. Pour a dark and stormy into the highball glass, adding the dark rum last so you can see the layer settle. Simply fill water to two-thirds, because any higher makes the glass top-heavy and obscures the pattern in the wall.

Boudoir is pressed soda-lime glass and is dishwasher safe. The relief is where deposits gather, though: limescale from hard water settles in the grooves and shows up there as a dull haze. Rinse aid and a not-too-hot programme keep that at bay. Place the glasses apart in the rack, because the thick wall can take a knock but the rim remains the most vulnerable point.
