La Rochere Lyonnais

The choice starts with the stem. The 23 cl wine glass has a short, solid stem that lifts the glass a little off the table without becoming fragile; the 20 cl tumbler has no stem and is the most indestructible piece in the series. If you like your white wine cold, you want the stem, because otherwise your hand warms the glass.

With the colour, something else comes into play. The old rose and the grey are in the glass itself rather than in a coating, so they will not fade, but they do change how wine looks: white wine appears darker in a grey glass than it really is. Do not fill the 23 cl wine glass beyond halfway. That is roughly 10 cl, the serving you get in a bistro, and it leaves enough air above the wine to smell something of it. A Kir Royal works better in this glass than in a flute, because the cassis blends faster in the wider bowl.

The 27.5 cl tea mug has a handle and a wall that holds the heat. For an Aperol Spritz reach for the wine glass: ice to the rim first, then the aperitif, and the bubbles last.

Lyonnais is pressed glass: molten glass pressed into a mould. That gives it a thicker wall and a stronger rim than blown crystal. The faint bubbles you sometimes see in the wall are part of that technique.

All three shapes are dishwasher safe, including the coloured ones. Place them apart in the basket, because a tumbler knocking against a stem is the most common cause of breakage.
