What is Affligem?

An abbey beer with a long history

Affligem is an abbey beer. This is different from a Trappist beer. An abbey beer bears the name of an abbey but is brewed by a regular brewery with the abbey’s permission. Affligem is brewed in Opwijk, a neighboring municipality of the abbey, and the brewery is part of Heineken. The year 1074 on the label refers to the abbey’s beginnings.

The beers follow the classic Belgian family. There is a Blond at 6.7%, a dark Dubbel at 6.7%, a Tripel at 9% and a Belgian Wit at 4.8%. According to the brewer, Affligem Blond was named the best Belgian Style Blond in the world in 2020. Affligem also makes alcohol-free beers, such as Belgian Wit 0.0: the taste of a wheat beer without the alcohol.

What does Affligem taste like?

Soft, fruity, and rounded

Aroma

Fruit and yeast

The Blond smells of soft fruit, with a spicy note from the Belgian yeast. The Dubbel smells of caramel and dark malt.

Palate

Smooth and full

Affligem Blond is rounded and smooth, with a firm head. The Wit is lighter and fresher, while the Tripel is fuller and warmer.

Finish

Mildly bitter

A mild bitterness finishes the beer and keeps the fruit in balance. This makes the Blond easy to drink.

Sweet 2/5
Bitter 2/5
Fruity 3/5
Strength 3/5

Flavor profile of Affligem Blond. The Tripel scores higher for strength, the Dubbel higher for sweetness. The Wit 0.0 is lighter and fresher.

How to drink it

How to pour Affligem

Drink Affligem from a goblet, with a generous head. The darker and stronger the beer, the less cold it should be.

Chilled, not ice-cold

Pour the Blond and Wit at 5 to 7 degrees. The Dubbel and Tripel can be warmer, around 8 to 12 degrees. This brings out the fruit and caramel more clearly.

The right glass for Affligem

An abbey beer belongs in a stemmed goblet. The wide bowl gives the beer room and holds a beautiful head. Choose 38 to 40 cl, so a 30 cl bottle fits with room for the head. These are the glasses we recommend ourselves.
