What is Don Julio Añejo?

A year and a half of patience in a bottle

Don Julio Añejo starts out as the same 100% blue agave tequila from the highlands of Jalisco as the Blanco. It is then aged in small batches for eighteen months in American white oak barrels. During this time, the tequila takes on color and flavor from the wood: vanilla, caramel and a dry woody note that frames the sweet agave.

While the Reposado is still fresh and light after eight months, the Añejo is full and complex. The agave is still there, but it works in harmony with wood and vanilla. This is the bottle for anyone who wants to sip tequila neat without reaching for the 1942 right away, and the perfect base for cocktails usually made with whisky, such as an Old Fashioned or Manhattan.

How to drink it

Sip, don't shoot

Drink Añejo like whiskey: neat or with one ice cube, slowly and mindfully.

Neat from a tulip glass

Pour 30 ml into a tulip-shaped tasting glass and let it sit for a minute. Smell it first, then take a small sip and hold it in your mouth for a moment. A drop of water opens up the vanilla.

Over one large ice cube

Pour 40 ml Añejo over a large ice cube in a heavy tumbler. The ice melts slowly, making it smoother without watering it down.

Añejo Old Fashioned

Stir 50 ml Añejo, 5 ml agave syrup, and 2 dashes of Angostura with ice in a mixing glass, then strain over a large ice cube. Express an orange peel over the top.

All about Don Julio →
What is the alcohol percentage of Don Julio Añejo?
Don Julio Añejo contains 38% alcohol, the same as Blanco, Reposado and 1942.
How long is Don Julio Añejo aged?
Eighteen months, in small batches in American white oak barrels. Reposado is aged for eight months, while 1942 is aged for at least two and a half years.
What's the difference between Don Julio Añejo and 1942?
Both are aged tequilas, but 1942 is aged for at least two and a half years and is sweeter and smoother, with more caramel and chocolate notes. Añejo is a little drier and woodier, and much more affordably priced for those looking to discover aged tequila.
How do you drink Don Julio Añejo?
Neat from a tulip glass or with a large ice cube in a tumbler, in small sips. No salt or lemon needed. If you want to mix it, make an Old Fashioned or Manhattan.
Is Don Julio Añejo suitable for a Margarita?
You can, and you'll get a rounder, warmer Margarita. But for a fresh Margarita or Paloma, Blanco is the better choice; Añejo is at its best in stirred cocktails or neat.
