Flavoured vodka with blackcurrant · Berlin

Puschkin Black Sun

Puschkin's darkest bottle: blackcurrant on a Puschkin vodka base, at 16.6%. Deep purple in the glass and at its best as an ice-cold shot, but also a great substitute for cassis in a glass of bubbles.

What is Puschkin Black Sun?

Blackcurrant, served ice-cold

Puschkin Black Sun is blackcurrant combined with Puschkin vodka. The vodka comes from Berlin, is distilled three times and finished with ice filtration, a step the brand traces back to an old Russian tradition. The berries give the drink its almost-black colour and full, sweet flavour.

At 16.6%, Black Sun is the lightest of the Puschkin flavours. So it's not a vodka to drink neat at room temperature, and the brand agrees: it's best served ice-cold as a shot. If you'd rather sip it slowly, use it as you would crème de cassis, with bubbles, ginger beer or sparkling water.

Dark fruit, sweet and full

Nose

Cassis and berry jam

Ripe blackcurrant, almost like a jar of berry jam, with a fresh green edge reminiscent of the shrub's leaves.

Palate

Sweet and juicy

Full and sweet, with the slight tartness of blackcurrant. It becomes thick and velvety straight from the freezer.

Finish

Tangy and warm

The berry lingers, with a gentle warmth from the vodka. Less bitter than Puschkin Red, rounder and darker.

How to drink it

Three ways to serve Black Sun

Keep the bottle in the freezer. The colder it is, the thicker and smoother the shot, and the less the sweetness dominates.

Freezer shot

2 cl Black Sun in a shot glass that's been in the freezer for a while. Bold, dark, and gone in one: that's how it's meant to be.

Black Sun Royal

15 ml Black Sun at the bottom of a chilled coupe, topped up with 100 ml dry prosecco or champagne. It works like a Kir Royal, but with a vodka heart and a little extra sweetness.

Everything about Puschkin →
What is the alcohol percentage in Puschkin Black Sun?
Puschkin Black Sun contains 16.6% alcohol. That makes it the lightest of the Puschkin flavors; Red, Nuts & Nougat, and Watermelon are at 17.5%.
What does Puschkin Black Sun taste like?
It tastes of blackcurrant: sweet, rich, and juicy, with a slight tartness. Served ice-cold, it becomes thick and smooth, making the berry taste even fuller.
Should Black Sun go in the freezer?
That's the best place for drinking it as a shot. Because of its low alcohol content, it gets syrupy there, but doesn't really freeze. For long drinks, the fridge is fine too.
Can I use Black Sun instead of cassis?
Yes, it works well in a Kir Royale or with ginger beer. Black Sun is a little sweeter and contains vodka, so use slightly less than you would cassis.
Is Puschkin Black Sun a liqueur?
Officially, it is sold as flavored vodka. Because of the sugar and its 16.6% alcohol content, in practice it drinks more like a fruit liqueur than vodka.
