Sonnema 1860 Berenburg
Sonnema's premium Berenburg: fresh herbs in every batch, a much higher herbal dosage and 35% instead of 30%. Not a mixer for cola, but a bitter to drink neat and at room temperature, from a lovely tumbler.

More herbs, fresh herbs
Sonnema 1860 was made to mark Sonnema's 160th anniversary. The brand began making Berenburg in 1860. The difference from the regular bottle lies in the herbs. Fresh herbs are used for every production batch, and the herbal dosage is considerably higher. The blend includes Seville orange, gentian root and basil, among other ingredients.
Those extra herbs make it fuller and richer, and at 35% alcohol, it's also stronger than regular Sonnema at 30%. That's why 1860 isn't meant for cola, but to be enjoyed neat: at room temperature, in a lovely tumbler, optionally with a few ice cubes.
In brief
Fuller and more herbal than the regular version
Fresh herbs
A pronounced herbal aroma, with the bitter orange of Seville orange and a green note of basil.
Rich and full
Fuller and rounder than regular Sonnema, with a refined blend of herbs and fruit. The bitterness of gentian comes through later.
Long and bitter
A long, warming finish with lingering gentian root and spices.
Flavor profile of Sonnema 1860 neat at room temperature. An ice cube makes it a little smoother and fresher.
How to drink Sonnema 1860
1860 is a bitter liqueur to be savored slowly. The spices are best appreciated at room temperature.
Neat in a tumbler
Pour 40 ml at room temperature into a beautiful tumbler. Let it sit for a moment, then sip slowly. This is how Sonnema recommends enjoying 1860.
Tumblers →With a few ice cubes
Prefer it chilled? Add two or three ice cubes to 40 ml of 1860 in a tumbler. The melting ice softens the bitterness and opens up the spices.
Whisky glasses →Berenburg Old Fashioned
Briefly stir 50 ml Sonnema 1860, 5 ml sugar syrup and a twist of orange over one large ice cube. The orange complements the bitter’s bitter orange notes.

The extra spices in 1860 make it suitable for classics that usually call for whisky. Keep it simple so the bitters take center stage.

Berenburg Old Fashioned
Sonnema 1860 instead of whisky, with a little sugar and orange. Spicy and warming.
Berenburg Sour
Replace the whisky with 1860 and shake with lemon juice, sugar syrup and egg white. Bitter, sour and smooth.
Kopstoot
A shot alongside a small glass of beer. With 1860, it’s a luxurious take on the Frisian tradition.
Warm Berenburg
Hot water, honey, lemon and a splash of 1860. The spices really open up in the warmth.More Sonnema Berenburg flavors
