What is Zuidam?

A Brabant family distillery

Zuidam Distillers is a family business in Baarle-Nassau, the Brabant village on the border with Belgium. The distillery was founded by Fred van Zuidam and is now run by the family. Zuidam distils everything itself in small copper stills and is known not only for jenever but also for whisky and gin under other brand names, such as Millstone and Dutch Courage.

The heart of the range is the malt wine: a grain distillate that gives jenever its full, grainy flavour. At Zuidam, it consists of equal parts corn, rye and malted barley. The corn provides sweetness, the rye spiciness and the barley structure. The korenwijn receives an extra, fourth distillation, making it fruitier and more elegant, and is then aged in small American oak barrels. Zuidam also makes separate genevers from a single grain, such as rye or spelt, as well as a long line of fruit, coffee and spice liqueurs.

What does Zuidam taste like?

Grainy, fruity and soft

Nose

Grain & fruit

Malted grain with juniper, licorice and anise. In the korenwijn, a notably fruity note from the additional distillation; in the aged bottles, vanilla.

Palate

Round and full

Soft and grainy in the young, full and slightly sweet in the old and the korenwijn. The rye is spicier, the spelt more rounded.

Finish

Warm and clean

A clean finish with grain. The longer it is aged in casks, the longer and warmer the finish, with wood and vanilla.

Sweet 2/5
Spicy 3/5
Fruity 3/5
Strength 3/5

Flavor profile of Zuidam Korenwijn 3 Year. The jonge jenever is lighter and less fruity; the liqueurs score high on sweetness.

How to drink it

Three ways to drink Zuidam

Jonge jenever ice-cold, while korenwijn and aged genever are best enjoyed otherwise. This way you taste what the distillery has put into them.

Ice-cold jonge jenever

Put the bottle in the freezer and fill a tulip glass to the brim. Take the first sip bent forward, without lifting the glass.

Glass: jenever glass →

Korenwijn at room temperature

Pour 4 cl of korenwijn into a tumbler or tasting glass, at room temperature or lightly chilled at most. Cold actually suppresses the fruit and vanilla.

More about korenwijn →

As a kopstoot

A full glass of jonge jenever next to a glass of pilsner. First sip the jenever from the rim, then follow it with the beer.

Where does Zuidam come from?
Zuidam Distillers is a family distillery in Baarle-Nassau, in North Brabant, near the Belgian border. The company was founded by Fred van Zuidam and is still run by the family.
How much alcohol does Zuidam genever contain?
The jonge genever, zeer oude genever and rye and spelt genever contain 35% alcohol. The oude genever and korenwijn contain 38%. The liqueurs range from 14.9% (cassis) to 40% (Orange and Honey Whisky).
What is the difference between genever and korenwijn?
Korenwijn contains much more malt wine, at least 51%, making it fuller-bodied and grainier. At Zuidam, korenwijn also undergoes an extra, fourth distillation and matures for one, three or five years in small oak barrels.
How do you drink korenwijn?
At room temperature or slightly chilled, neat in a tumbler or tasting glass. Serving it ice-cold actually masks the fruity and woody flavors that make korenwijn interesting.
Which glass do you use for genever?
For ice-cold jonge genever, use a tulip-shaped stemmed glass filled to the brim. For oude genever, korenwijn and aged genever, use a tumbler or tasting glass so you can better appreciate the aroma.
Does Zuidam also make liqueur?
Yes, quite a selection. Gall & Gall sells Zuidam Café, Chocolat, Vanille, Kaneel, Butterscotch, Speculaas Amandel, Framboise, Fraise, Cherry, Cassis, Limon, Poire William, Orange, Honey Whisky and the creamy Velvet Dream, among others.
