A household that has to pick one usually takes the tall model, because it handles both jobs; anyone who often drinks whisky or rum is exactly who needs the low shape. Fill a long drink glass right to the top with ice before you pour. That sounds wasteful but is the opposite: a glass full of ice melts more slowly than three cubes and therefore dilutes the drink less. A whiskey sour is shaken with egg white and poured into the low tumbler, where the foam layer has room to spread across the whole surface.
