Eclat Macassar

With a tumbler you mainly look at the ratio between height and base. At 32 cl Macassar is roomy enough for a long drink with ice, yet stays low enough to stand steady on a full table. The facets do more than decorate: they give grip on a glass that quickly turns slippery with condensation. Also look at the quantity. Two works if you are topping up an existing set or giving a gift, six if you are building a complete service. Fill the glass with ice first and only then pour, so the drink chills in one go instead of slowly watering down. For water at the table, pour to about two centimetres below the rim, so you can pick the glass up without spilling. Macassar is also a fine glass for an old fashioned over one large block of ice, and the height works well for a negroni that you serve over ice rather than strain.

The glass is clear and untreated, which means it can simply go in the dishwasher. Facets do hold on to limescale more readily than a smooth wall, so choose a cycle with a good rinse and dry them off while the glass is still lukewarm. Stand the tumblers upright and not stacked inside one another, because prising two stuck glasses apart is the quickest way to break one.
