Choose by what you pour. The 30 cl tumbler is the glass for water, soft drinks and whisky neat; the 38 cl D.O.F. is the double version and suits everything that goes over a large ice cube. For cocktails without ice there is the 30 cl coppa, the 22 cl martini glass and the 26 cl fizz glass. Want to make an impression, then reach for the 80 cl gin glass or the 39 cl margarita glass, both glasses that only come into their own with plenty of ice and a garnish. Long drinks go in the bibita glasses of 40 and 48 cl, and the 55 cl wine cocktail glass sits exactly in between.

The 80 cl gin glass is not a glass you fill halfway. Fill it to the top with ice, pour the gin over it, top up with tonic and lay the garnish on top: with that much ice barely anything melts and the tonic keeps its fizz. For a negroni you do the opposite and reach for the 38 cl D.O.F. with one large cube. The 30 cl coppa is wide and shallow, which makes it right for an aperol spritz with plenty of ice and a slice of orange.

Luigi Bormioli makes Roma 1960 from lead-free crystal glass with a thermally reinforced rim, and that is exactly where ribbed glass takes the most punishment. Wash on a short glassware programme and place the glasses apart from each other, because ribbed walls hook into one another and you end up pulling them out at an angle. Polish afterwards with a lint-free cloth, since limescale stays visible in the grooves. Do not stack the tumblers, even if it looks as though they fit.
